What started as a few species of animals living on the National Mall has grown enormously over the past 100+ years, into the treasured National Zoo delighting visitors today. Smithsonian employee William Hornaday was inspired to start an effort to save American Bison when he visited the western U.S. and saw how depleted their numbers were. Thanks to his efforts, the National Zoological Park officially opened in 1891, and its employees have been working to save more species ever since.
